Chairperson's Message

The Lucas-Kennedy (LK) Foundation for African Development is more than an organization—it is a living legacy. Founded in 2021, the Foundation was born from the vision and pioneering spirit of two great leaders, Mr. C. Payne Lucas and Dr. Joseph Kennedy, who co-founded Africare in 1970. For fifty years, Africare transformed lives across Africa—not only through more than one billion dollars in aid, but by building futures, nurturing leaders, and advancing the promise of African potential.

When Africare closed its doors in 2020, its mission did not end—the torch was passed to the LK Foundation. We are honored to carry forward that history, not as custodians of the past, but as architects of a bold new future for Africa and its global Diaspora.

At the heart of the Foundation is a community of more than 150 seasoned Africare professionals who continue their life’s work as our volunteers, consultants, and staff. With their expertise—and with your partnership—we are not starting from scratch; we are accelerating impact. Together, we mobilize knowledge, resources, and innovation to advance education, entrepreneurship, health, food security, water access, and diplomacy, while building sustainable bridges between Africa and the United States.

But none of this is possible without you. The LK Foundation is powered by collective action—by those who see Africa not as a continent of need, but as a partner in progress. We invite you to walk with us: invest in scholarships, mentor the next generation of leaders, forge partnerships, and amplify the narratives that affirm Africa’s rightful place in the world.

This is more than development—it is a movement.  A movement that declares Africa’s story will not be written for her, but by her sons and daughters—on the continent and across the Diaspora. A movement that honors legacy while advancing a future defined not by aid, but by agency.

We call upon you—our friends, partners, and global community—to help carry this torch forward. Together, let us ensure that the legacy of Lucas and Kennedy continues to illuminate paths of progress and shape a brighter tomorrow.

With gratitude and determination,

Mac
